Overview and metadata sections
WPVI-TV/Channel 6 began broadcasting as WFIL radio and television in 1947, becoming an ABC-TV affiliate in 1948. It was among a number of media outlets owned by the Walter Annenberg-founded Triangle Publications. The WFIL studio at 46th and Market Streets in Philadelphia was the first national facility built expressly for broadcasting and also served as headquarters for Triangle Publications. WFIL's programming included daily news broadcasts, nationally syndicated programming, public service programming, and locally-produced shows such as Bandstand (later the national American Bandstand). In 1971, WFIL was sold to Capital Communications and shortly thereafter changed its call letters to WPVI. A year earlier WPVI created the Action News format which presented a greater number of news stories than competitors through the use of shorter segments. WPVI also continued producing Public Affairs programs such as Visions, El Barrio, Assignment, and Sojourn. In 1985, Capital purchased the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), making WPVI an ABC-owned station.
This collection consists of WFIL/WPVI news footage, documentaries, and production logbooks and index cards generated between 1947 and 2006. The bulk of the collection consists of audiovisual materials recorded for inclusion in news broadcasts, or recordings of the broadcasts themselves. There are also numerous recordings of feature segments and Public Affairs programs including Visions, Assignment, El Barrio, Sojourn, Prime Time, and Philly After Midnight. Footage is a mixture of film, videotape, digitizied, and born-digital audiovisual files.
The WFIL and WPVI production logs and index cards pertain to shooting assignments and news broadcasts. They exist only in hard copy for earlier years but in both hard copy and PDF format for later years. There are sometimes listings for assignments that do not have any corresponding footage in the collection.
The collection is arranged into 2 series as follows:
- Series 1: Accession A, 1947-1985
- Subseries 1.1: 16mm News Footage, 1947-1983
- Subseries 1.2: Public Affairs, 1965-1985
- Subseries 1.3: Logbooks and Index Cards, 1947-1983
- Series 2: Accession B, 1977-2006
- Subseries 2.1: News Footage, 1977-2006
- Subseries 2.2: Public Affairs and Programming, 1977-2006
- Subseries 2.3: Savers, 1977-2006
- Subseries 2.4: Logbooks, 1977-2006
WVPI/6ABC and ABC, Inc., licensee of WPVI-TV, donated physical title to these materials in two large accessions (in 1981-82 and 2011), while retaining all intellectual property rights.
A small portion of material from Subseries 1.1 (16mm News Footage, 1947-1983) has been digitized or is available on DVD. Consult SCRC staff for information and access. Logbooks and index cards in Subseries 1.3, tape labels for the "saver" compilations in Subseries 2.3, PDF logbooks in Subseries 2.4, have been digitized and are available online on the Temple University Digital Collections website.
Accession A (1947-1983) is largely 16mm film which requires extensive inspection and preparation by Special Collections Research Center staff prior to viewing. The accession also includes a number of 2" video reels, some of which have been selectively digitized. Researchers must consult DVD or low-resolution electronic use copies. If none exist, researchers must pay for a use copy. Please allow approximately two weeks for staff to locate, inspect, and prepare viewing copies. In some instances material may have to be sent to an outside vendor for preparation or transfer.
Low-resolution, electronic files from Accession B (1977-2006) are streamed and accessible only from public computer terminals in the Special Collections Research Center reading room. Researchers can use the PDFs of production logs (see Subseries 2.4) to identify specific segments or tapes for viewing. Temple University Libraries does not hold any high-resolution copies of this material; all high-resolution copies must be obtained through ABC. See SCRC staff for duplication requests related to educational and research uses.
Processing of material within this collection is ongoing, following to requests and preservation concerns. Finding aid prepared in May 2014 by John Pettit, Assistant Archivist, Special Collections Research Center.

Collection Inventory
Accession A contains WPVI news footage, public affairs programs, logbooks and index cards spanning 1947-1983. It is organized into three subseries: Subseries 1.1: 16mm News Footage, 1947-1983; Subseries 1.2, Public Affairs, 1965-1985; Subseries 1.3, Logbooks and Index Cards, 1947-1983.
Subseries 1.1 is comprised of over 400 boxes of film containing 9,500 canisters of black and white and color 16mm film spanning 1947-1983. There are missing months in the years 1948 and 1950 and there is little or no film covering 1959-1966. The footage consists of aired and unaired excerpts of local news coverage, generally 1-3 minutes in length.

This subseries has not yet been migrated into this finding aids database. Please CLICK HERE to access the finding aid.
Subseries 2.1, News Footage, consists of 14,618 low-resolution WMV files of news stories and news related programming from between 1977-2006. The low-resolution files are compilations of edited segments and raw footage used in news broadcasts rather than the full news broadcasts themselves. Some files are compilations of sports stories and footage from their Harrisburg Bureau.

This subseries has not yet been migrated into this finding aids database. Please CLICK HERE to access the finding aid.
Subseries 2.4, Logbooks, contains 120 news broadcast production logbooks for the time period 1977-2006. These logbooks have been digitized as chronologically arranged PDF files in Temple University's Digital Collections website. Researchers must use the digitized copies of these logbooks.
The digitized logbooks correspond to the footage in Subseries 2.1 and can be used to identify segments to view by browsing the logbooks for potentially relevant segments, and then viewing the larger WMV files to identify the relevant clip. March 1977 to May 1989 are handwritten and are not text searchable. June 1989 to February 2005 have some degree of text searchability. March 2005 to December 2006 are typed but not searchable.
