Overview and metadata sections
The Zero Moving Dance Company, founded in 1972 by Karl Hellmut Fricke-Gottschild, was a leading modern dance company that performed throughout the Philadelphia region and even took a European tour. This collection chronicles its history until Gottschild separated from the company in 1993. In addition, it includes Gottschild's dance career after Zero Moving, much of which involve performances with his wife Brenda Dixon Gottschild. The collection is comprised of administrative materials, performance piece materials, publications and posters by ZMDC, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and photographs.
Hellmut Gottschild was born in Germany in 1936. He studied under Mary Wigman eventually becoming her assistant. He moved to the United States in 1968 with a company, Group Motion, he started in Germany with two other dancers. Soon after moving to the U.S., he became a dance professor at Temple University. In 1972, he started Zero Moving Dance Company. The company grew and became a well-known dance company in the Philadelphia area and beyond. After separating from ZMDC, he continued his career with his wife Brenda Dixon-Gottschild, performing around the country.
This collection chronicles its history until Gottschild separated from the company in 1993. In addition, it includes Gottschild's dance career after Zero Moving, much of which involve performances with his wife Brenda Dixon Gottschild.
