Overview and metadata sections
This is an artificial collection of photographs and other materials assembled by the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center to document Jewish-owned businesses, camps, organizations, and community members in the Greater Philadelphia region during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In many cases, the photographs in this collection are copy prints and negatives made during an initiative by the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center to collect visual documentation about the community, but return originals to the donors. The folder level inventory below reflects the presence of copy prints, photocopies, and/or negatives in the absence of originals.
Original photograph formats found in the collection include albumen prints, black-and-white prints, cabinet photographs, cartes-des-visite, color prints, diffusion transfer prints or Polaroids, and tintypes. Also included with the photograph collection are a small number of drawings and slides. Text in English, Yiddish, and Russian can be found throughout the collection, primarily as annotations on the backs of the photographs.
The collection is arranged in order of original accession number. Numbers appear before each photograph title in the inventory below.
Donated by various individuals between 1972 and 2003. Collection previously administered by the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center, acquired by Temple in June 2009.
The bulk of the photographs from this collection have been digitized and are available online with additional item level description on the Temple University Digital Collections website.
Collection reprocessed and finding aid prepared in August 2016 by Jessica M. Lydon, Associate Archivist and Irena Frumkin, student worker.
