Overview and metadata sections

The American Hebrew Society was founded in 1901 as the Roumanian Workingmen's Beneficial Association. The association initially provided Romanian Jewish immigrants with integration assistance, but grew to offer its members social events, sick benefits, and internment planning. After realizing that the association's name did not identify the organization as Jewish, the group was renamed the Roumanian Hebrew Beneficial Association. In 1965, the association changed its name once again to the American Hebrew Society.

This collection contains the correspondence, financial statements, meeting minutes, and membership files of the American Hebrew Society. It also includes cemetery records for the association's reserved plots in Har Jehuda, Har Nebo, and Mt. Sharon cemeteries.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material, and then chronologically.

Collection materials donated by the following donors: Mildred Berdrick, 1986; Dora Gottenberg in 1976 and 1997, David Doret in 1996, and Rose LeSavoy and James Robb in 1994 and 1995. Collection previously administered by the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center, acquired by Temple in June 2009.

Collection processed and finding aid prepared in September 2015 by Jenna Marrone, Project Archivist, Special Collections Research Center.
