Overview and metadata sections
Beginning in the late 1960s, punk, and later, new wave music, gained in popularity in the United States. Often anti-establishment and politically charged, this musical movement also produced a subculture characterized by rebellion, with distinctive fashion and personal adornment.
In Philadelphia, there was a vibrant punk, new wave, and post-punk scene. Bands like Deborah Harry of Blondie, Soundgarden, Violent Femmes, Radiohead, Dead Kennedys, Alice Donut, and Philadelphia's own, The Dead Milkmen, as well as many others, performed at locally famous venues, the Hot Club, JC Dobbs, Khyber Pass, Revival, and others. Later, many of the venues hosted "all ages" shows, which allowed people under the age of twenty-one to participate in punk culture.
This collection consists of posters and fliers for punk, new wave, and other musical genre shows. Primarily documenting the Philadelphia scene in the 1980s and 1990s, there are also posters and fliers for shows in Iowa, Minnesota, New York, and other locales. The posters and fliers date from 1970 to 2007, with the bulk dating from 1980 to 2000. Many are undated.
Researches will find posters and fliers for shows featuring: Deborah Harry of Blondie, Soundgarden, Violent Femmes, Radiohead, Dead Kennedys, and Alice Donut. More frequently featured are Philadelphia-based punk and hardcore punk bands, including The Dead Milkmen, Electric Love Muffin, King of Siam, Mr. Mehta, Serial Killers, Carnival of Shame, More Fiends, and Flight of Mavis.
In addition to music shows, researchers will find posters and fliers (many are photocopies) for art shows and other performances, events related to the punk and new wave movement, as well as antiwar and political protest.
The posters are arranged into three groups. First, are fliers arranged alphabetically by venue name, with most of the venues represented being in Philadelphia. Following are folders of concert posters and fliers grouped alphabetically by state. Last, are the fliers for art shows and other performances, and antiwar and political protests.
