Overview and metadata sections

The University Settlements is comprised of three houses located in Philadelphia, including: University House, Dixon House, and the Western Community House. Western Community House was established in 1837 by the Western Soup Society of the Society of Friends. University House was established in 1901 as the Social Service Department of the Christian Association of the University of Pennsylvania. Dixon house was founded in 1934. In 1967 the Settlements disassociated themselves from the Christian Association and became Diversified Community Services, Inc. The area served by the Settlements is south of Market Street to Jackson Street, and from Broad Street west to the Schuylkill River. University Settlements also operated Camp Oxmead in Burlington County, New Jersey.

This is a collection mostly contains snapshots showing various activities related to the houses comprising the University Settlements. Images depict activities such as sports, classes, and camping related to Dixon House, Western Community House, and University House. Most of the images are undated and unidentified. The collection also contains a small file of photographs detailing activities at Camp Oxmead, a camp operated by the organization in Burlington County, New Jersey. Photographers include Nason & Cullen, Photo-Illustrators, Jules Schick, and Standard Photo Service Co. Most images are undated and unidentified.
