David Kanes, union organizer and labor mediator, was born in 1909 in Belarus. He came to Philadelphia at age 11, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1930 He served as the first National Secretary Treasurer of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Workers in Lansing Michigan in the 1930s. In 1939 he was involved with local unions during the first successful hospital strike in Pennsylvania at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. In World War II, Kanes was appointed to the War Labor Board in the Cleveland, Ohio region after which he went to Provincetown, Massachusetts. Upon returning to Philadelphia, he spent several years as a contractor. In 1973, Governor Schapp appointed Kane as Director of the Bureau of Mediation. After his retirement, Kanes worked as an Independent Arbitrator. He died in 1996.
This collection include correspondence, subject files, clippings, publications, and other records related to Kanes's activities as a mediator and arbitrator, issues related to strikes, as well as personal papers.

Collection Inventory

Series 3: Legal Information. This series include information regarding mediation and arbitration activities, collective negotiations, and legal relations.
Series 4: Memorabilia. This series contains buttons, emblems, postcards, pins, awards and membership cards belonging to David Kanes.
Series 5: News clippings. This series includes clippings from various newspapers regarding strikes, negotiations, mediation, conventions, etc. involving Kanes and labor union relations.
Series 6: Photographs. Photographs have been removed to the Miscellaneous Photographs Collection, box 9.
Series 7: Publications. This series includes various pamphlets, booklets, books, articles, and handouts regarding labor unions, state and employee rights, negotiations and politics.
