Overview and metadata sections
The Mount Airy Learning Tree (MALT) is a non-profit community educational organization serving the neighborhoods of Mount Airy and its environs. Established December 1980 by two community associations, East and West Mount Airy neighbors, the school first offered classes in February 1981.
The goal of MALT has been to be a community educational resource offering opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds to learn and share skills with one another without the pressure of grades and tests. Classes have ranged from aromatherapy to financial planning to yoga. With a minimal staff and a wealth of eager community volunteers, MALT has offered classes as a school without walls, classes being given at a number of rented and free spaces, churches, schools, and community centers around Mount Airy. Besides publishing seasonal course bulletins, MALT has put out a newsletter and other community bulletins. MALT also organizes two popular fundraising activities for the benefit of the organization: the Mystery Theatre and the Philadelphia Pizza Taste-Off.
