Overview and metadata sections
On October 26, 1962, Pennsylvania representatives of the American Association of Industrial Nurses met in Harrisburg, PA for the purpose of forming the Pennsylvania Association of Industrial Nurses (renamed Pennsylvania Association of Occupational Health Nurses in May 1997). Their purpose was to "constitute the professional association of nurses engaged in the practice of industrial nursing; ...to improve health and promote standards for industrial nurses and industrial nursing service; and to stimulate industrial nurse participation in all nursing activities, whether local, state, or national."
The Association provides opportunities for professional exchange and growth through workshops, seminars, lectures, and publications for the nurse employed in industry. The Association studies legislative actions which pertain to the field of industrial nursing and keeps its members informed. Its members receive the Journal of the American Association of Industrial Nurses as well as special manuals and other publications aimed at promoting professional standards. The Committee on Education is responsible for planning and recommending educational programs for nurses preparing to enter the industrial nursing field and for nurses actively employed in industry. As constituents of AAIN, members participate in conferences which are held yearly to provide an opportunity for formal and informal exchange among nurses and physicians concerned with the health of workers.
This collection contains correspondence, membership lists, bylaws, applications for seminars, vitae of seminar participants, programs, bibliography and photocopies of articles, newsletters, photographs, and other materials related to the Philadelphia Association of Occupational Health Nurses (PAOHN). These records additionally document the PAOHN mission of providing educational opportunities to members by documenting a series of seminars which the group organized and presented between 1981 and 1985. The seminars included ones on social issues impacting women's physical and emotional health at work and career pathways.
