Overview and metadata sections

The Associated Alumni of the Central High School of Philadelphia is an association of alumni of Central High School, the second oldest continuous high school in the United States. The association traces its roots to Central High School's first graduating class in 1842. The Associated Alumni support the various activities of the magnet school through financial donations, volunteering and maintaining a presence at school events, providing networking opportunities for students, involvement with recruitment, advising student groups, and other activities.

In 1873, the existing alumni group of Central High School, already heavily involved in supporting the school, formally reorganized as the Associated Alumni of the Central High School of Philadelphia. The Associated Alumni's mission is "to encourage and support the School's high standards of scholarship, integrity and democratic values, to facilitate and maintain pride in Central High School and, as well, to encourage an impact upon community growth through financial and personal involvement, while broadening social and professional relationships among its alumni." A number of funds have been created by the Associated Alumni to provide monetary support for the School and its activities, including the Barnwell Foundation, the Sesquicentennial Endowment Fund, the Arthur Tracy Endowment, and other funds set up by specific graduating classes. The Associated Alumni of the Central High School of Philadelphia also administers scholarships and prizes to students and holds fundraisers throughout the school year to support the athletic teams and other school programs.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2014-2016 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
