Overview and metadata sections
Herman Wendell (born 1852), along with Walter Bassett Smith, was a general contractor and manager for developers Anthony J. Drexel and George W. Childs. In this capacity, the firm of Wendell and Smith played a significant role in the planning and development of the suburban community of Wayne, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Herman Wendell reserved a chunk of land for himself and settled there with his family, including son Evert "Ted" Jansen Wendell (1884-1973).
Ted Wendell was the next-door neighbor of Marcus "Mark" Edmund Heilner (born 1886). His brothers were James K. and Laurence B. Heilner.
The collection consists of about 450 negatives showing scenes from Wayne, Radnor Township, and other nearby locations in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Images depict trains, buildings, landscapes, and people, especially the Wendell and Heilner families. The images document the early development of Wayne, one of the first planned suburban communities, especially the role of Herman Wendell in this work. The earlier negatives are glass plates, the later ones are film. Some are accompanied by paper prints.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.
In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Radnor Historical Society directly for more information.
