Overview and metadata sections
The Parry family resided in Wyncote, Pennsylvania. Edward Hicks Parry (1889-1980) was a noted advocate for preserving bird habitats. He served as president of the Wyncote Bird Club for 25 years, helped establish the Crosswicks Wildlife Sanctuary, and led the initiative to transform the Wyncote Bird Club into a chapter of the National Audubon Society.
John C. Parry’s receipted bills are for household items, doctors, schools, utilities, taxes, and other expenses. Most of the businesses are located in Wyncote, with some from Jenkintown and Philadelphia, and include: Burke & Dolhenty, carpenters and builders; Edwin Tyson, hardware; J. Howard Hay, painter; Levi M. Bean, boarding and livery stables; Joseph Heacock, florist; Jenkintown & Cheltenham Gas Company; Thomas Nicholson, coal and lumber, succeeded by Grauer & Brother; C. M. Case, groceries, meats, and provisions; C. H. Millar, groceries and dry goods.
There is a small group of ephemera among which are Edward Hicks Parry’s record of family tennis matches played on the family’s court, 1906, 1909, his daily weather record, 1904-1910, and two Willow Grove Park musical programs.
Most of these papers were purchased at an auction of Parry house contents in 1981.
Gift of Carl W. Gatter.
