Overview and metadata sections

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is a national organization that promotes the well-being of older persons through advocacy, education, and service. It was established in 1958 by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, based on an earlier organization also initiated by Dr. Andrus (in 1947), the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA).

Chapter No. 713 of the American Association of Retired Persons was established in Phoenixville, Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1969. The local branch was organized by Reverend Morris W. Derr, D.D., past president of an AARP chapter in Kentucky. Open to all men and women 55 years of age or older, membership benefits initially included automobile and life insurance plans, a drug service and a travel service, as well as subscriptions to a bimonthly magazine and news sheet. The Phoenixville chapter of the AARP is still active as of 2013, offering monthly meetings with lunch and entertainment or an informative speaker.
