Overview and metadata sections

As of 2013, the Bensalem Township School District in Bucks County, Pennsylvania has six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The oldest school in the district is Bensalem High School, which opened circa 1925.

Dorothy Doyle Call (1923-2004) was a graduate of Bensalem High School class of 1941,where she played on all of the girls' sports teams. After graduating, Call worked as secretary to the Superintendent and as office manager for Bensalem Township School District.

This collection consists of 18 scrapbooks created by Dorothy Call. Dating from 1940 to 1967, they document the Bensalem Township School District, in particular Bensalem High School. 15 red scrapbooks, 1955-1967, include clippings from local newspapers about the high school. There are also two binders, 1950-1955, about the school district.

Of special interest is a scrapbook Call began to create while still a student at Bensalem High School about its girls' sports teams, 1940-1945. The volume also includes a few letters to Dorothy Call from Helen M. Smith, 1987-1989. Smith coached girls' sports at the high school from 1937 to 1943, and led the teams to several championships.

Gift of Dorothy D. Call, Office Manager for Bensalem School District.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Historical Society of Bensalem Township directly for more information.
