The first employment of a teacher in Delaware County, Pennsylvania was noted in 1684. Soon after, a school was established by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and Friends schools have remained prominent features of the educational system of Delaware County. An act of general public education was passed in 1834, and despite substantial opposition, implemented. The county was divided into forty-four school districts.
