Overview and metadata sections

Morgan Hebard, Jr. (1921-2000) of Philadelphia was a naturalist and photographer who served as president of the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association. His parents were renowned entomologist Morgan Hebard (1887-1946) and Margaret Champlin Perry Claxton, granddaughter of the artist John La Farge (1835-1910).

Hebard attended Yale University before serving four years in the Army as a Japanese language specialist and civil affairs officer for the Office of Strategic Services. Afterwards, he worked on Wall Street and then for the International Boiler Works Company in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania before becoming president of the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association.

Around 1976, Hebard began pursuing his interest in nature photography, focusing on bird life. His pictures have been published widely and exhibited in galleries including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Woodmere Art Museum. He donated his extensive collection of bird transparencies to the Academy of Natural Sciences.

Hebard's first marriage ended in divorce; his second wife, Jean Ballard Hebard, was an artist.
