Robert Bruce Merrifield was born on July 15, 1921 and died on May 14, 2006. He was a biochemist and won the 1984 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the invention of a solid phase protein synthesizer. He spent the bulk of his career at The Rockefeller University.

The collection contains video and some audio interviews by leaders in the field of peptide synthesis. They were interviewed for a program on Peptide Protein Synthesis. There are also printed copies of the various working versions of the script for this program as well as an original drawing of Merrifield's plan for his Solid state Protein Synthesizer and a set of diazo prints for the Endevco (Becton, Dickinson & Co.) commercially-marketed protein synthesizer. This collection consists of two sets of material. The first is a comprehensive run of reprints of papers authored or co-authored by the Nobel-prize winning chemist Robert Bruce Merrifield. The second set is a collection of materials used by Merrifield in the creation of a film titled "Peptide Protein Synthesis".
