Robert J. Baptista is a chemist and a colorant industry historian. He was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and attended the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. He received his B.S. in chemistry in 1966 and his Ph.D. in 1972. Baptista has been employed by several chemical firms, including Verona Dyestuffs Corporation, Mobay Chemical Corporation, and Miles, Incorporated among others. In 1972, he began his employment with Verona Dyestuffs Corporation, a division of Mobay Chemical Corporation, and from 1981 to 1986 he was in charge of manufacturing operations at the firm's newly-acquired Damascus, West Virginia plant. From 1987 to 1993, Baptista was plant manager at Harmon Colors Corporation in Haledon, New Jersey (Harmon was another division of the Mobay Corporation). In 1994, he was named vice-president of Rubber Manufacturing USA for Miles, Incorporated and moved to Orange, Texas. Baptista retired from this position in 2000.
From 2002 to 2003, Baptista served as executive director of the Chemical Alliance, an initiative aimed at promoting new investment in the chemical industry in West Virginia. He remains a resident of Orange, Texas and spends much of time documenting and writing about the colorants industry in the United States. He additionally maintains a website where digital versions of much of this material has been posted.

This series contains the About Robert J. Baptista files of the Robert J. Baptista Papers. Arranged in its original order, this series consists of three files in Box 1. These files contain biographical materials about Baptista, including his doctoral dissertation and materials regarding his work with Bayer Corporation.
This series contains the Plant Histories and Supporting Materials files of the Robert J. Baptista Papers. Arranged in its original order, this series consists of four boxes of one-hundred and three files. These files contain histories compiled by Baptista from his voluminous research files and consist of a narrative and accompanying documents and images. The contents of this series are arranged into the following five sub-series:

- Chemical Alliance Zone
- General Aniline and Film Corporation (GAF)
- Mobay Chemical Corporation/Harmon Colors Corporation
Arranged in its original order, this sub-series consists of eight files in Box 1. These files contain articles written by and belonging to Robert J. Baptista about the histories of the following chemical manufacturers: Pharma Chemical Company; West Virginia Sulfur Dyes Plant; Verona Chemical Company; Harmon Colors Corporation; Chemical Row Industries; and Bayer Corporation.
In 1994, Robert J. Baptista was named Vice-President of Rubber Manufacturing USA for Miles, Inc., the name by which Bayer AG's U.S. holdings was known. He retired from this position in the year 2000.
Arranged in its original order, this sub-series consists of twenty-six files in Boxes 1-2 regarding Bayer Corporation and its Texas plants. These files contain corporate publications authored by and belonging to Robert J. Baptista, a copy of the survey results for a corporate safety survey at Bayer Corporation's Orange, Texas plant, and a registration statement from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Also included in this sub-series are non-Bayer materials dealing with environmental issues, health, and safety from the Chemical Manufacturing Association and the Texas Chemical Council, and files containing publications, proceedings, and reports from the Texas Institute for Advancement of Chemical Technology.
Upon his retirement from Bayer, Robert J. Baptista took a position as Executive Director of the non-profit Chemical Alliance Zone in Charleston, West Virginia during the period 2002-2003. The goal of the Chemical Alliance Zone was to attract and/or retain chemical industries in the Kanawha Valley area of the state.
Arranged alphabetically by subject, this sub-series consists of twenty-one files in Box 2. These files contain publications and informational brochures belonging to Baptista from his time with the Chemical Alliance Zone and West Virginia Chemical Industry Committee.
Robert J. Baptista co-authored a paper "IG Farben in America: the Technologies of General Aniline and Film," which appeared in the June 2006 issue of the journal History and Technology.
Arranged in its original order, this sub-series consists of one box of eighteen files. These files contain GAF annual reports, agreements, forms, and exhibits to forms for Baptista's article about the firm.
Bayer AG purchased Harmon Colors from Allied Chemical in January 1977. In 1987, Robert J. Baptista took over as Director and Plant Manager of the Harmon Colors plant in Haledon, New Jersey.
