Overview and metadata sections

Sadsbury Preparative Meeting was established by New Garden Monthly Meeting in 1725. In 1737, the meeting became part of Sadsbury Monthly Meeting. At the time of the Hicksite Separation, which in this meeting occurred in 1830, two preparative meetings were formed. In the following year, the Orthodox preparative meeting moved to Simmonstown. It returned to Christiana in 1881 and was discontinued in 1919. Sadsbury Preparative Meeting (Hicksite) was discontinued in 1925. At that time, Sadsbury Monthly Meeting assumed all its business

Records include: Hicksite men's minutes, 1828-1925, and records related to trusteeship and property of Sadsbury PM 1894-1932 donated by Sadsbury Monthly Meeting.

Biographical / Historical

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.

Scope and Contents

Minute books of the Hicksite preparative meeting as follows: 1828-1832, 1833-1839, 1839-1846, 1846-1850, 1864-1890, 1891-1916, 1917-1925. Volume for 1828-1832 contains pre-Separation minutes, 1828-1830.
