This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Quaker Meeting Records at Haverford College Quaker & Special Collections and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. Overview and metadata sections

Buckingham Monthly Meeting was established in 1720 by Bucks Quarterly Meeting out of Falls Monthly Meeting. At the time of the Hicksite Separation of 1827, the monthly meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. Buckingham Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) was discontinued in 1897, and its members were attached to Falls Monthly Meeting (Orthodox). Buckingham Monthly Meeting (Hicksite), which reunited with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1955, was the forerunner of the current Buckingham Monthly Meeting of Friends.

Records of the pre-Separation and Hicksite Buckingham Monthly Meeting include: minutes, 1720-1979/1998-2000/2004-09, and born-digital minutes for 2010-2023, plus digital financial records related to Buckingham Friends School. Also includes vital records, 1693-1988; Women's minutes, 1722-1891; Ministers and Elders' minutes, 1787-1815, 1867-1928; First Day School records, 1876-1964; School Committee papers, 1790 & 1878-1950; Epistles received, 1791-1848; and miscellaneous papers, 1899 and 1923. Records of Orthodox meetings, 1747-1897, include: minutes 1827-1897; vital records, 1747-1896; women's minutes, 1827-1897; Ministers and Elders' minutes, 1815-1843.

Collection Inventory

Biographical / Historical

At the time of the Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1827-28, pre-Separation vital records were generally retained by the branch with which the recorder was affiliated. Researchers are advised to consider vital records which span this period carefully: in many cases, the meeting without the original records may have reconstructed these records for its membership only, giving the impression that individuals in the other branch were never members.

Biographical / Historical

Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.

Committee which had care of the spiritual welfare of the meeting, particularly the meeting for worship. Ministry and Counsel committees were established in 1918 by Hicksite meetings, which no longer designated members as ministers or elders. The predecessor of Ministry and Counsel was the Preparative Meeting of Ministers and Elders.
