Overview and metadata sections

Marlborough Monthly Meeting was set off from Cornwall Monthly by Nine Partners Quarterly Meeting in 1804. It became part of Cornwall when that quarterly meeting was established in 1816. The meeting separated in 1828.

In 1843, Marlborough proposed to Cornwall Quarterly a change in the Discipline related to marrying outside of the Society of Friends. Cornwall Quarter united in agreement and forwarded the proposal to New York Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1844. As a result, the Yearly Meeting laid down Cornwall Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1846, and attached its meetings (including the Hicksite branch of Marlborough Monthly Meeting) to Westbury Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite). In 1847, Marlborough Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) was laid down by Westbury Quarterly Meeting, and the members were instructed to join to New York Monthly (Hicksite). By 1848 few members had joined, and New York Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) disowned those out of compliance.

The majority of members of what had been the Hicksite branch of Marlborough Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) continued meeting for worship unofficially in the Hicksite Meeting House and eventually incorporated in 1854 as the Milton Friends of Progress, affiliated with other Progressive Friends groups in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

Records of Marlborough Monthly Meeting (Hicksite), 1828-1846. Includes Men's minutes, 1828-1847, and Women's minutes, 1828-1847, and an 1847 proclamation from the meeting declaring independence from New York Yearly Meeting. The records of the meeting's approximate successor, Milton Friends of Progress, are described separately.

Divided into series: Men's Minutes: 1.1 1828-1846: Women's minutes: 2.1 1828-1846: Miscellaneous: 3.1 Proclamation, 3.2 Cornwall Quarter Document.
