Overview and metadata sections

Friends Meeting of Washington was established as an independent meeting on Florida Avenue in the District of Columbia in 1930. It provided a convenient place of worship for then President Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover; Mrs. Hoover was greatly involved with the creation of the meeting and the construction of the meeting house. In 1944, Friends Meeting of Washington affiliated with both the Orthodox and Hicksite Baltimore Yearly Meetings. The older Washington Monthly Meeting, referred to as I-Street and Orthodox in origin, merged with College Park Friends in 1956 to form Adelphi Meeting.

Deposit, Friends Meeting Washington office and archives. A subset of the digital records were deposited by Wayne Finegar, General Secretary of Baltimore Yearly Meeting, in 2020.

Scope and Contents

In 1950, the Committee of Ministry and Oversight was made into two separate committees: the Committee of Ministry and Counsel and the Committee of Overseers. In 1965, the Committee of Ministry and Counsel changed its name to the Committee of Ministry and Worship. Between 1995 and 2000, the charge broadened to include the Marriage and Family Relations Committee (as the Worship and Family Committee) before returning to the Ministry and Worship Committee.
