Overview and metadata sections
The Community of Christ was established in 1965 as a progressive, ecumenical community committed to the city and rooted in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Though affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Synod, the Community of Christ is a lay-led Christian fellowship with members from many denominational backgrounds, including Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopal, Mennonite, Catholic and Evangelical Covenant. They are committed to working for peace and justice in their individual and corporate lives. A weekly Eucharistic service is central to their common life. They deny no one participation or leadership on the basis of race, class, sexual orientation, or gender. More can be learned at: https://sites.google.com/site/communityofchristdc/.
This small collection includes documents that tell the story of the Community of Christ's beginnings and mission, as well as their discussions and efforts. A large part includes the schedule of their weekly "happenings," as well as their spiritual input through homilies/sermons/meditations and worship services. The Community of Christ has attempted to live out their principles of peace and justice within their own congregation through consensus-based decision-making and shared responsibilities, as well as within their city neighborhood and beyond.
The Swarthmore College Peace Collection is the official repository for these papers/records.
