Overview and metadata sections

Mary B. Herzel, from the Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) area, was a retired schoolteacher, and a Catholic peace activist and prolific writer of letters to the editor. She was involved with the Harrisburg Committee on Central America, the Harrisburg-Hershey Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Peace and Justice (which she founded), among other groups and organizations. Se protested against nuclear weapons, the Persian Gulf War (1990-1991), the School of the Americas, the death penalty, the war on Iraq and Afghanistan, and the waste of war.

Herzel received an Unsung Heroine award from the International Women's Day Coalition of Harrisburg in March 1991.

This small collection consists almost entirely of newspaper articles and clippings that help to document Herzel's peace activities and opinions. Included are dozens of Letters to the Editor that she wrote while living in Harrisburg (Pennsylvania). The material is foldered by date, from 1980 through 2013.

The Swarthmore College Peace Collection is the official repository for these papers.
