Overview and metadata sections
Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was an Italian playwright.
The collection consists of correspondence between Pirandello and the Italian actress Marta Abba, who spent much of her life interpreting his plays. Pirandello's forty-three plays, as well as other literary works, are discussed in the correspondence, which reveals the special "maestro-disciple" relationship shared by the couple. She died in 1988.
His original letters are listed below (Boxes 1-6). Abba retained the originals of her letters to him, but supplied the photocopies noted in Boxes 7 and 8.
Luigi Pirandello's letters to Marta Abba have been published: Pirandello's love letters to Marta Abba, edited and translated by Benito Ortolani (Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1994).
The original letters by Abba to Pirandello were retained by her.
The collection is also available on microfilm.
Acquired in 1986 from Marta Abba. Additions from Mrs. Christian Aall in 1989.
This collection was processed in 2002. Finding aid written in 2002.
