Overview and metadata sections
Oliver "Jack" Thompson joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and served under General Douglas MacArthur during the Occupation of Japan from 1946-1956. During the Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE), Thompson served in the Public Information Office as a 1st Lieutenant. In this capacity, he covered portions of the Tribunal, served as a liaison and guide for journalists and visiting dignitaries, and assisted in organizing photo shoots and trips throughout Japan for a documentary film on the Occupation of Japan. Thompson graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City with a B.A. in history in 1965.
The collection largely consists of judgements, summation documents, and opinions from the Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE). In addition to these materials, there are affidavits, an indictment, and some biographical materials on Hideki Tojo and Kōichi Kido, as well as a small number of administrative files related to the Tribunal, including a charter and directory. There are also two photo albums and a folder of photographs from the Tribunal.
The collection was donated by Marjorie Thompson in 2024. The accession number associated with this donation is ML-2024-001.
