Shirley Ecker Boskey was an attorney who served as director of the International Relations Department of the World Bank. Boskey was educated at Vassar College and Columbia University, where she earned her law degree. Before her time at the World Bank, Boskey was employed as Assistant Chief Counsel for the Office of Territories of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Boskey began working at the World Bank in 1954, where she supported the creation of economic development organizations. She was promoted to the role of Director of the International Relations Department in 1975, becoming the first woman to head a department at the World Bank. She retired from that position in 1983. After retiring, Boskey was involved with World Bank retiree organizaton the 1818 Society, eventually writing a history of the organization. She was also on the board of directors of Recording For the Blind and Dyslexic of Metropolitan Washington. Boskey died in 1998.
The Shirley Ecker Boskey Papers consist of reports, correspondence, meeting minutes, and publications from Boskey's time at the Department of the Interior and at the World Bank. Among the World Bank materials, there is a particular emphasis on international investment insurance. Additionally, there are materials related to Boskey's involvement in the 1818 Society, a group for World Bank alumni, and a box of bound publications related to both the Department of the Interior and the World Bank.
The collection was donated by Lisa Kahn in 2022. The accession number associated with this donation is ML-2022-003.
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
The collection was processed by Will Clements in February 2022. Some materials were rehoused in archival folders. The finding aid has been organized into series, but no physical arrangement was done at this time.
