Abstract:

Mina Mauerstein-Bail is a development professional with extensive international experience in the links between health and economic development. These Papers include reports, study papers and background materials collected over the course of her career and reflecting her areas of expertise: HIV and development, water and sanitation, and supporting local government and community capacity to address HIV/AIDS issues.

Mina Mauerstein-Bail is a development professional with extensive international experience in the links between health and economic development. Her areas of expertise include: HIV and development, maternal mortality (safe motherhood), water and sanitation, and the development of local governance, community leadership, and public-private partnerships in addressing these issues.

Mauerstein-Bail has been a leading member of the international development community in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and a substantial part of her career consists of working for the United Nations (UN) and other development agencies. At the UN in the early 1990s she was the Programme Co-ordinator for the HIV/AIDS Division for the Global and Interregional Program within the UN Development Program. Subsequently she was the Manager of the HIV and Development Program and went on to be the inaugural Program Director for the partnership program between the UN and the Alliance of Mayor's Initiative for Community Action on AIDS at the Local Level (AMICALL).

Throughout her career Mauerstein-Bail has been involved with numerous international advisory panels and currently acts in a consultative role to several organizations involved in interdisciplinary approaches to health and development and promotion of cross-sector partnerships. She is currently a Board member of PACT, a non-profit development organization working around the world, and Co-President of the Sirleaf Market Women's Fund (SMWF/US), a non-governmental organization providing funding and support for women in Liberia. She works as an independent consultant and fundraiser.

The Mauerstein-Bail Papers consist of materials related to Mauerstein-Bail's work in global health and development. In the area of HIV and development, the Papers include United Nations (UN) program reports and studies, background material on the global AIDS epidemic produced by other agencies and organizations, and other regional reports, books, special reports and conference materials. Also included are AMICAALL newsletters and reports related to HIV/AIDS programs and endeavors in African cities and regions. Water and sanitation materials include several reports as well as an interview transcript and notes for a book project on water and sanitation issues. Other materials include books and reports related to safe motherhood and disability issues, particularly in developing countries.The papers are predominantly UN and other agency reports related to the program areas Mauerstein-Bail was involved with, rather than her correspondence, memoranda, or other records of her direct activity.
