Overview and metadata sections

Werner

Werner (pseudonym of Alexander Schifrin) was a Russian native who was exiled to Germany (1923-1933) and subsequently lived in France (1933-1939) and the United States (1940-1951).

Consists of selected papers of Werner. Included are notes, outlines, and chapter drafts for a projected book on the international military, political, and strategic problems arising from World War II and the post-war period, positing the thesis that in the event of a world conflict with atomic weapons neither Russia nor the United States could win. With a working title of THE NEW BALANCE OF POWER, most of the material concerns military issues. Also present are copies of his syndicated column (1948-1949), "The Course of the World," articles, bibliographies, and a large file of newspaper clippings used as source material.

Materials are arranged into two series -- the first is a collection of papers from Max Werner. The second is the records collected by Ruth Lowe and given to the library in 1968.

Consists of two gifts to the library. One gift was received as a deposit prior to 1968 and officially made a gift in 1989 by Tamar Wann (nee Kazman); the second was given to the library by Ruth N. Lowe, a friend of Tamar Kazmann, Werner's heir, in 1968. A note in the box mentions that 26 boxes of "Max Werner Archives" were sent to the Foundation for World Government.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.

There is no indication that any physical processing took place for this collection. When the original deposit was accessioned as a gift in 1989 the collection became the "Max Werner Papers" and the second 1968 gift became "Max Werner Additional Papers". The finding aid for this collection integrates both and they are shelved together at the Mudd Manuscript Library. A finding aid was created from a MARC record in 2007.

There is no indication that materials were separated from this collection.
