Overview and metadata sections
George McAneny was a prominent New York City civil servant. Born in 1869 in Greenville, New Jersey, McAneny attended Jersey City High School and began a career in journalism after graduation. He eventually switched gears to the public sphere and served as Executive Secretary of the New York Civil Service Commission, Secretary of the New York Civil Service Reform League, President of the City Club, President of the Borough of Manhattan, and President of the Board of Aldermen. McAneny also served as the executive manager of the New York Times. He died in 1953.
Contains papers of McAneny--lectures, reports, correspondence, committee and association files, clippings, scrapbooks, and photographs--referring to his numerous positions in the government of New York City, including president of the Borough of Manhattan (1910-1913), president of the Board of Aldermen (1914-1916), and chairman of the State Transit Commission (1921). Also included are files relating to his work in civil service reform associations (1897-1937) and on the staff of New York newspapers, the New York Worlds Fair Corporation (1935-1940), the Carl Schurz Memorial Committee, and the Regional Plan Association (1930-1940), all of which reflect his special interests in regional and city planning, zoning, city and state transit, and city financing.
This is an unprocessed collection and remains in its original arrangement. There are no boxes 119-122 (these were separated and placed in the A. Jacobi Papers; please see appraisal note).
Acquisition information is not available.
