Overview and metadata sections

Merrill

Consists of 25 diaries, primarily kept by Lucy Amanda Merrill of Hudson, New Hampshire. The 1873 diary belonged to her son-in-law, Charles L. Spalding of Hudson, New Hampshire. One of the diaries has stamps for "Spaulding and Trow" of Nashau, N. H., which was a newspaper company that Charles Spaulding and Fred Trow ran. Some diaries do not have names inscribed in them. It is possible some of these uninscribed diaries belonged to her daughter, Sarah Byam Merrill Spaulding, as the 1886 diary includes an entry about "my wedding day," which is the year she married Charles L. Spaulding. There are two diaries belonging to Sarah Spaulding, as they are inscribed with "S. B. M. Spaulding" and "Merrill Spaulding."

The diarists mostly filled the books with diary entries, though two of the diaries are completely blank. The diaries contain ephemera such as newspaper clippings, handwritten notes, and other ephemera. The diaries also contain quotations, accounts, death dates, birthdays, and addresses in the first and last few pages.

Materials are arranged chronologically by year.
