Overview and metadata sections
Diamela Eltit is a Chilean author and performance artist. She was one of the few writers who remained in Chile during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, when she participated in the collective CADA, staging art actions against the dictatorship, and published her first novels, Lumpérica (1983) and Por la patria (1986). She is also an academic teaching literature and creative writing, and has held visiting professorships at the University of California at Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, Washington University at Saint Louis, University of Pittsburgh, University of Virginia and, since 2007, New York University, where she holds a teaching appointment as Distinguished Global Visiting Professor and at the Creative Writing Program in Spanish. She was cultural attaché during Patricio Aylwin's government at the Chilean Embassy in Mexico. Eltit is married to Chilean academic, writer and politician Jorge Arrate.
The collection consists of manuscript and typescript drafts of and notebooks related to Eltit's works both published and unpublished, including Lumpérica (1983), Por la patria (1986), El cuarto mundo (1988), Vaca sagrada (1991), and others; personal and work-related correspondence, mostly from the mid-1980s to 1990s; and other miscellaneous papers. including newspaper clippings, prize nominations, personal papers and a fairly large number of photographs of Eltit, her family, and various other literary and political figures.
The order of materials at the time of their acquisition has been maintained.

This collection was purchased (in part) with funds provided by the Program in Latin American Studies (PLAS).
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Collection Inventory
Consists of typescript and manuscript drafts of and notebooks relating to Eltit's works, including Lumperica, Pro la patria, El cuarto mundo, Los vigilantes, La vaca sagrada, and other published and unpublished works, as well as several notebooks of poems by Jorge Arrate, and eight master's and Ph. D. theses on Eltit's work.
