Overview and metadata sections

Picton, Thomas, 1775 or 1776-1861

Rev. Thomas Picton was the principal of Woodbury Academy in Gloucester County, N.J. He was awarded an honorary degree from The College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), in 1811.

The collection consists of three sermons and one letter by Rev. Thomas Picton. On the first page of the first and second sermons, Picton recorded dates, names, and locations of baptisms that he performed or sermons that he preached. The first sermon (11 leaves), based on Psalm 58:11, bears the date of a baptism performed on Sept. 11, 1768; the second sermon (12 leaves) is on Haggai 1:7 and has a date of a baptism performed on June 11, 1771. The third sermon (4 leaves, undated) is based on 2 Cor. 13-14. In a letter to Samuel Ladd Howell, dated Westfield, Dec. 24, 1807, Picton discusses the possibility of succeeding Prof. Andrew Hunter, Jr. (Princeton Class of 1772) as professor of mathematics at the College of New Jersey.
