Overview and metadata sections

Ingram, John

John Ingram is said to have been born at Staindrop Hall, County Durham, England; but he may well be identical with the John Ingram, elder son of Francis, of Liverpool, who was educated at Eton and admitted at Trinity College Cambridge in January 1784. Little is known of his life, other than that he and his wife, Frances, traveled extensively in Italy. An early patron of Francesco Guardi, Ingram died in London on January 31, 1841.

John Godfrey was Ingram's son-in-law, married to his daughter Augusta. He is known to have been a member of the Accademia Tiburina in Rome and the plans of Sicilian temples present in this collection may have been done by him.

The collection includes letters to John Ingram, sketches of the lives of Italian Renaissance artists of the Ferrarese School by writer and art historian Girolamo Baruffaldi (possibly from or for his Vite de' pittori e scultori ferraresi . . .) with notes by Ingram, notes on art and travel, and other pieces collected by Ingram. Also featured are early Greek and other inscriptions collected by John Godfrey, regional maps and plans of various temples, Arabic manuscripts, and other material relating to Ingram and Godfrey. Additionally, the collection contains a later edition (1597) of Giambattista Cinzio Giraldi's book on the Duke of Ferrara ( Commentario delle cose di Ferrara . . .), interleaved with manuscript annotations by John and Frances Ingram, and accompanied by a notebook they kept as they pursued their research interest in the Renaissance city of Ferrara, as well as in travel, private libraries and book collecting, and the poet Torquarto Tasso.

The collection is arranged in its original order.

Purchased from Christopher Edwards on December 23, 2005 (AM2006-76).
