Overview and metadata sections
William Holman Hunt was a British painter. In 1843, while attending lectures at the Royal Academy Schools, he met Sir John Everett Millais, who together with Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They sought to revitalize art by emphasizing the detailed observation of the natural world in a spirit of quasi-religious devotion to truth. Although the Pre-Raphaelites broke up in 1852, Hunt remained loyal to that style until his death in 1910.
The collection consists chiefly of selected correspondence of William Holman Hunt. Correspondents include Arthur Hughes, Helena Faucit Martin, John Everett Millais, William Michael Rossetti, John Ruskin, Thomas Woolner, Henry van Dyke, and others. Some of Hunt's letters are addressed to his friend "Bradley" where Hunt writes about his painting The Triumph of the Innocents. Also included is a copy of Hunt's pamphlet on Alfred Tennyson's poem "The Lady of Shallott," upon which he based one of his paintings, and some family letters and photographs.
This collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject. Materials have been acquired through multiple purchases over a number of years.
