Overview and metadata sections

Caine

Sir Hall Caine was a British novelist and playwright. He lived with Dante Gabriel Rossetti as secretary and companion for the last year of Rossetti's life. His works include Recollections of Rossetti and The Christian. Caine was the highest paid novelist of his day.

The collection consists of selected letters by Caine to Curtis Brown, Sir Martin Conway, Ford Madox Brown, James Fitzmaurice-Kelly, and several others. Also included is one letter to Mrs. D. Whiteley regarding Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

The collection was formed as a result of a Departmental practice of combining into one collection material of various accessions relating to a particular person, family, or subject.

The letter to Curtis Brown was the gift of Carol Savage in 1924.

The letters to Mr. Everett were the gift of Alexander. D. Wainwright in 1984. Various AM.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure.
