Overview and metadata sections
Douglas C. Tudor was a midshipman in the Royal Navy, serving on various ships between 1908 and 1912. Tudor was lost with the whole ship's company when the H.M.S. Good Hope was sunk during the Battle of Coronel off Chile on 1 November 1914. He was a 23-year-old lieutenant by then.
The collection consists of journals/logs and photograph albums of Tudor. Included are journals for the period of 23 September 1908 through 24 November 1912, aboard HMS ships London, Invincible, Temeraire, Skirmisher, Dee, Patrol, Britannia, and HMS Good Hope. These contain tables of distances and daily positions, and daily journal of events, with special coverage of important operations, such as the raising of HMS Venable's steampacket boat, a mock attack and defense of Portland, and the Balkans War in 1912 between Turkey and Greece. They are illustrated with watercolor drawings and sketches of charts, harbors, anchorages, ship's gear, equipment, views, and embellishments. In addition, there are two photograph albums, covering 1905 to 1912, showing Tudor as a cadet at Osborne, then Dartmouth, and at sea in all his ships--in all, about 275 photographs of Osborne and Dartmouth life and events, life aboard ship, ship crews, events and scenes aboard and at home.
Organized by genre: journal albums, photograph albums.
Purchase from Fisher National in 2005; Acquired with matching funds provided by the Program in Hellenic Studies with the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund (AM 2005-135).
