Overview and metadata sections
Born in Brazil in 1908, Carlos Ribeiro was trained in bookselling by José de Mattos at his famous Livraria Quaresma in Rio de Janeiro. Ribeiro later opened the Livraria São José, which became a cultural center, publishing new authors, holding book signings, and hosting gatherings of intellectuals. Ribeiro also participated in the Sindicato dos Editores and helped to create Rio de Janeiro's Feira do Livro (book fair). Ribeiro died in 1993.
The collection consists of the business and personal papers of Carlos Ribeiro, and includes correspondence from Brazilian authors, photographs of Ribeiro and various literary figures, two reception books and a necktie signed by numerous authors and other intellectuals, writings by Ribeiro and others, printed matter, and miscellaneous materials.
Purchased from Susan Bach in 2002 (2003-11).
