Overview and metadata sections
Qāsim Ghanī ]was a literary scholar, diplomat, and physician.
Consists of correspondence, drafts, journals, and notebooks of Iranian scholar and author, Qāsim Ghanī. Many of Ghanī's correspondents were prominent figures in Iranian academia, literature, culture, medicine, and politics. Some of the correspondence and manuscripts include material relating to Ghanī's proposed biography of the Iranian painter, Kamal-ol-Molk. The collection is in Persian with a small number of materials in English, French, and Arabic.
Information is not available regarding the arrangement scheme of materials processed in 2001. For the 2023 addition, materials are organized in the order in which they were received, although any arrangement work done prior to the 2023 transfer is unknown.
Gift of Cyrus Ghani to the Near Eastern Studies (NES) department in the late 1980s, with the assistance of Haleh Esfandiari, a lecturer at the NES department at the time. The papers were first sent to Dr. Esfandiari, who held onto them for many years, until they were passed on to Professor Jerry Clinton's custody. Clinton held the papers until he transferred them to the NES librarian, Dr. James Weinberger. Some materials were transferred to Special Collections in 2001 (AM 2001-69). The remaining materials were in the possession of Kambiz Eslami until his retirement in 2019, at which point he transferred them to Kimberly Leaman, who placed them in Wafa Isfahani's care until they could be transferred to the new NES librarian, Dr. Deborah Schlein. The materials were then reviewed and collated by Mahsa Pashaei before final transfer to Special Collections in 2023 (AM-2023-098).
In a custodial history note from Kambiz Eslami, he writes: "Qāsim Ghanī's son, Cyrus, came to the United States then to the United Kingdom for continuation of his education and decided to reside in America. He passed away in New York in 2016. He gathered his father's papers from a variety of sources (friends, family members, colleagues, etc.), and began editing (1978-1980) and then publishing (1980-1984) them in 12 volumes in London by himself and distributed by Ithaca Press. In this endeavor he sought the assistance of Haleh Esfandiari who was a lecturer at the Department of Near Eastern Studies of Princeton University in the 1980s. The papers donated to the Princeton University Library are listed in two separate documents. Although most of the papers have been published in these 12 volumes, the only exception was left out and that is volume number 8. This volume was published in Tehran, Iran in 1982 by a scholar named Muhammad Ali Sawti. In his introduction to this particular volume Dr. Sawti explained that 14 or 15 years prior (i.e. 1967 or 1968) he found this manuscript in a rare bookstore in Tehran and since he found important information in it regarding the transfer of the remains of the 1st Pahlavi Shah from Egypt to Tehran, he bought the book and hid it in a secure place until the situation would permit its publication. Therefore, this manuscript is not in this batch of donated documents, however Dr. Cyrus Ghani did publish it from the Tehran edition as volume number 8 of his edition. After the publication of the papers, Dr. Cyrus Ghani decided to give the original papers to a university in the United States. Dr. Esfandiari, who at the time was teaching Persian language and literature, suggested Princeton Library, which Dr. Ghani accepted."
Gift of Cyrus Ghani to the Near Eastern Studies Department in the late 1980s. Partially transferred to Special Collections in 2001 (AM 2001-69). Remaining materials transferred to Special Collections in 2023 (AM-2023-098).
