Overview and metadata sections
Walter D. Edmonds was a popular writer of regional and historical fiction primarily set in the Mohawk Valley region of Upstate New York.
The collection consists of letters and financial statements received by Edmonds from his New York City literary agency, Harold Ober Associates. The letters (1929-1974) and financial statements (1931-1967), with some carbons of Edmonds' replies, concern the publication and payment for most of Edmonds' nearly seventy short stories and at least seven of his novels or writings for young adults. A sampling of titles mentioned include "An Honest Deal" (1930), "Erie Water" (1932), "The Death of Red Peril" (1928), a story of a racing caterpillar, The Big Barn (1930), Rome Haul (1932), produced on the stage and as a film under the title The Farmer Takes a Wife, Drums Along the Mohawk (1936), also produced as a film in 1939, Chad Hanna (1940), and The Matchlock Gun (1941), which won the Newbery Medal for juvenile fiction. Also present is a small file of letters (1940-1964) from Collins Publishers concerning the British publication of Chad Hanna and other works.
