Overview and metadata sections
John Lehmann (1907-1987) was an English author, poet, journalist, editor, and publisher. He was founder and editor (1936-1950) of New Writing, manager (1938-1946) of Hogarth Press, founder and director (1946-1952) of John Lehmann, Ltd. (publishers), founding editor (1953-1961) of London Magazine, and visiting professor at various universities. He also wrote and edited numerous works, including Forty Poems (1942), The Age of the Dragon: Poems, 1930-1951, Edith Sitwell (1952), I am My Brother (1960), Demetrios Capetanakis, A Greek Poet in England (1947), and Shelley in Italy: An Anthology (1947).
The collection consists of the extensive family papers of John Lehmann. Included are thousands of letters to him from friends and literary associates, such as E. M. Forster, Edith Sitwell, Harold Nicolson, William Plomer, Stephen Spender, Christopher Isherwood, Demetrios Capetanakis, and Alexis Rassine, and correspondence and papers of family members going back to the 1800s, including his grandparents, Frederick and Nina Chambers Lehmann, his parents, Rudolf and Alice Lehmann, and his sisters, Beatrix, an actress, and Rosamond, an author. Also present are autograph and typescript manuscripts for poems, articles, speeches, reviews, broadcast talks, and drafts for his autobiography; papers relating to the Hogarth Press and New Writing; many diaries and notebooks; business, financial, and domestic account files; personal documents; juvenilia; photographs, drawings, and paintings; memorabilia; amd printed matter.
Organized into the following series:
Purchased at a Sotheby auction from Christopher Edwards in 1993, from John Wilson Ltd. in 1993, from David Holmes in 1995, from John Wilson in 1995, and from David Holmes in 1995. Leather notebook of Frederick Lehmann is a gift of Guy Phillips. Diaries of R. C. Lehmann were a gift of Roland Philipps in 2021 (AM 2022-001).
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
