Overview and metadata sections

Roberts, Elizabeth Madox, 1881-1941

Born on October 30, 1881, Elizabeth Madox Roberts spent the majority of her life in Perryville and Springfield, Kentucky. In 1910, Roberts moved to Colorado with her sister and, during this time wrote several poems that were published as part of In the Great Steep's Garden (1915). Following her time in Colorado, Roberts studied at the University of Chicago (1917-1921). In 1922, a group of poems that Roberts wrote as an undergraduate were published as Under the Tree. Roberts went on to publish several novels before her death in 1941, notably The Time of Man (1926), The Great Meadow (1930), and A Buried Treasure (1931).

The collection contains 92 letters (1919-1939) by Roberts to her friends Glenway Wescott and Monroe Wheeler (plus five carbons of letters by Wheeler to Roberts); 20 poems by Roberts including "The Tree," "Upon the Hill," and "Christmas Morning"; and a few notes and incomplete articles about Roberts by Wescott. Also present are three letters by Marianne Moore to Monroe Wheeler (n.d.), Glenway Wescott (n.d.), and Mrs. Floyd Wescott (1960).

This collection was the gift of Monroe Wheeler in 1981.
