Overview and metadata sections
The Wainwright family was a prominent family of New York State. John Tillotson Wainwright (1898-1930) entered the United States Foreign Service and drowned attempting to save the lives of two others while stationed in Cuba. Thomas Lawson, following his medical studies, entered the navy in 1809 as a surgeon's mate. In 1811, Lawson left the navy and joined the army, eventually rising to serve as Surgeon General (1836-1861).
The collection consists of a collection of letters, autographs, and papers of the Wainwright family of New York State, dating primarily from the nineteenth century. Included are two scrapbook albums, compiled by Maria Livingston Tillotson as a memento for her nephew, John Tillotson Wainwright (1898-1930), containing (1) photographs, letters, genealogies, clippings, and memorabilia of the Wainwright, Tillotson, and Livingston families--particularly of his father, John T. Wainwright (1865-1900)--as well as (2) autographs, letters, and photographs of Civil War generals and other prominent people, such as Winfield Scott, Richard Montgomery, Edward Eggleston, Daniel Webster, and Aaron Burr.
A separate series of autographs consists of letters (1694-1880) received mainly by Thomas Lawson, surgeon-general (1836-1861), and Major C. S. Wainwright, but also by military officers, government officials, and others. Included in this group are a document (1694) appointing Anthony Lawson as sheriff of Norfolk County, Va., signed by Edmund Andros; letters by James Buchanan, John C. Calhoun, Joseph Hooker, Jefferson Davis, George Meade, and Zachary Taylor; and miscellaneous autographs.
This collection is into three series by accession or deposit number.
Consisting formerly of several deposits, the collection was made a gift in 1984 by John T. Wainwright (Princeton Class of 1954).
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
