Scott, Austin, 1848-1922

Born in Ohio, Austin Scott (1848-1922) earned degrees from Yale and the Univesity of Michigan. Scott studied at the University of Berlin and the University of Leipzig, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Leipzig in 1873. While in Germany, he assisted the historian George Bancroft, then American minister to Germany, in preparing the tenth volume of History of the United States. In 1883, Scott was appointed to the faculty of Rutgers College as a professor of history, political economy, and constitutional law, and was elected to succeed Merrill Edward Gates as president of Rutgers in 1891. Scott returned to teaching in 1906 and also served as the Mayor of New Brunswick from 1912 to 1915.

The collection consists of selected papers of Scott relating to New Jersey history. Included are typed manuscripts for his unpublished book "New Jersey, A Study in Results" and his article on the "Origin of the Judicial System of New Jersey;" notes on the history, institutions, and courts of New Jersey; and printed copies (circa 1891-1905) of a few of Scott's addresses, Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, and other offprints. Also present is the autograph manuscript of "Memoirs" (1892) by William Paterson (Princeton Class of 1835), mayor (1846-1878) of Perth Amboy, N.J., with a letter (1896) to Scott.

Arranged as follows: manuscripts for "New Jersey, A Study in Results"and miscellaneous notes, notes on New Jersey and courts of New Jersey, printed matter, memoirs of William Paterson.

The nature of acquistion is unclear from exisiting records.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure.
