Overview and metadata sections
Historian and author, Howard C. Rice (1904-1980), directed Princeton's Special Collections during the 1960s.
The collection consists of papers relating to the preparation of The American Campaigns of Rochambeau's Army, 1780-1783 (1972), which was translated and edited by Rice and Anne S. K. Brown and published in two volumes: Volume I containing the journals of Jean Clermont-Crevecoeur, Jean Baptiste Verger, and Louis-Alexandre Berthier; Volume II containing itineraries, maps, and views prepared by Berthier illustrating the campaigns of the French army under Rochambeau during the American Revolution.
Included in the papers are correspondence with Anne S. K. Brown, American and European libraries, and publishers Princeton University Press and Brown University Press; publicity matter; Xerox copies of the original journals and itineraries with French transcriptions and English translations; binders of final manuscript text; indexes and bibliographies; and related printed matter. Also present are notes and photographs of the 1976 bicentennial reenactment of Rochambeau's march and on the Charles W. Peale portrait of George Washington owned by Rochambeau.
Arranged roughly as follows: correspondence, publicity, notes, itinerary transcripts, sources, journal transcripts, other works, 24 binders of manuscript text, index and publicity.
The original manuscripts upon which these papers are based are located in the Rhode Island History Society archives, the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at Brown University, and the Princeton University Library (Berthier Collection).
This collection was the gift of Mrs. Howard C. Rice, Jr. in 1981. AM 82-10
