Overview and metadata sections
A graduate of Union College (Class of 1814), Walter Hubbell entered the law office of N. W. Howell and John Greig of Canandaigua, N.Y. He was admitted to the bar in 1817 and continued to practice his profession till his death.
A graduate of Union College (Class of 1827), Levi Hubbell practiced law with his brother, Walter, served in the New York State legislature, and became a judge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Walter Seymour Hubbell also practiced law in Canadaigua, New York.
The collection consists of correspondence, documents, a diary (1838), genealogies, documents, legal papers, financial records, and printed matter of the Hubbell family of Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York. The collection contains all the personal and professional papers of the Hubbells--mainly those of Walter Hubbell (1795-1845), his brother, Levi Hubbell (1807-1876), and Walter's son, Walter Seymour Hubbell (1823-1892), all lawyers--including New York State Supreme Court records, legal cases involving the Hubbells, legal reference volumes, wills, deeds, diplomas, indentures, land agreements, legal notebooks, records of the Canandaigua Academy, bills, receipts, account books, and property maps. In addition, there is material on the family of Eliza Maria Phelps Hubbell (1798-1839).
Arranged in the following order: correspondence (both personal and business), personal papers (diaries, genealogies, journals), correspondence and official papers of both the Canandaigua Academy and the Ontario Female Seminary, miscellaneous financial papers (stocks, insurance policies, cancelled checks), business and legal papers relating to the Hubbell's various law firms, and printed matter (court calendars, legal briefs, court records).
The Hubbell Papers were acquired by the Princeton University Library in 1946 as the bequest of Stewart Brooks Hubbell of the Class of 1907 (d.1944). (AM 13171)
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. During 2022, restrictions on original Ancil Beach letters where researchers were required to use surrogates were lifted as part of a restrictions review project.
