Overview and metadata sections
Jelal A. Azal was an Iranian Bayani scholar and was the grandson of Subh-i Azal, successor to the founder of the Bayani faith. Bahaullah was the half-brother of Subh-I Azal who was an important leader of the Babi movement to which Bahaullah also belonged. When both men were sent into exile by the Iranian authorities, Bahaullah broke away from the Babi movement then led by his half-brother and announced his mission from God to form a new religion. Subh-I Azal had two sons, Ahmad and Jelal; hence, Jelal Azal is the half-nephew of Bahaullah.
The collection consists of original and Xerox copies of letters by Azal in Cyprus to William McElwee Miller, Presbyterian missionary, regarding the Babi-Bahai movement, documents referred to in the letters, and photographs of Bahai houses of worship in Israel and Chicago. The letters contain Azal's comments on Miller's translations of Bahai material, suggested amendments to Miller's writings, and historical background on the development of the Bahai movement.
