Overview and metadata sections

Dayton, Jonathan, 1760-1824

Jonathan Dayton was a Revolutionary soldier and New Jersey congressman and senator. His father, Elias Dayton, was a storekeeper and Revolutionary brigadier-general.

The collection consists of the papers of the Dayton family of Elizabeth, N.J., and contains works, correspondence, and documents of Jonathan Dayton (Princeton Class of 1776), Elias Dayton, William Dayton, William B. Dayton, and Aaron Ogden Dayton (Princeton Class of 1813.) Jonathan Dayton's material includes sixteen anonymous and confidential letters to James Madison regarding the presidential elections; and several letters to Elias Dayton. Also included is a notebook of Jonathan Dayton which may have originally contained lectures numbered I-XII, of which only lectures X-XII on theology are present; and a deed for land in Morristown, NJ, signed by Dayton. There is an address by Aaron Ogden Dayton to the Princeton University Cliosophic Society, a Fourth of July oration by him, and an eleven-page biographical sketch of him. There are two letters by Elias Dayton which were written during the seige of Yorktown, Pa., in 1781.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
