Consists primarily of some 200 letters written to and by English poet and critic Coventry Patmore.

Patmore, Coventry, 1823-1896

English poet Coventry Patmore was a librarian by profession, and originally an Anglican by creed, but he later converted to Catholicism. Inspired by his new religion, he composed some of his best religious poetry, prolific in both quality and quantity.

The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author. The major portion of material, however, came directly from Derek Patmore, Coventry's great-grandson.

Most of the collection was purchased from John Hart in 2007. Transcripts of letters by Patmore, photographs, etc. are a gift of Derek Patmore.
