Overview and metadata sections
Joseph Bennett was born on January 26, 1922, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in 1943, and continued there for his post-graduate studies through 1946. While interested in piano and skin diving, Bennett also served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. After the war, Bennett began to work with Willington & Co., a New York investment bank. Also in 1946, Bennett co-founded The Hudson Review. He also wrote some books of his own, including Baudelaire: A Criticism (1944, 1946 2nd ed.), Decembrist (1951), and Luxury Cruise (1962). Bennett died in 1972.
The collection consists of various drafts--most of which are incomplete--for several works of fiction of Bennett (Princeton Class of 1943), as well as poems, travel writings, transcripts of radio broadcasts, photographs, documents, printed material, and papers of other persons. Novels represented are In the Shadow of Etna, Sons of Rich Men, Strawberry Leaves, and The Trevor and Townshend Fortunes; his novel Luxury Cruise is represented by reviews, advertisements, and a hardbound copy of the book, but only a synopsis of it exists in holograph form. In addition, there are his letters to Dr. and Mrs. Percy Wood and a copy of his will.
The following standard abbreviations, or their variations, are used to identify materials in this collection: ALS = autograph letter signed, TLS = typed letter signed, ACS = autograph card signed, AMsS = autograph manuscript signed, and TMsS = typed manuscript signed.
Gift of Dr. Percy H. Wood, Jr.
